Deadspin recently posted an amusing article on chainsaws — but it’s also quite informative and insightful. The author, Samuel Wadhams, provides a great overview on what it means to use a chainsaw, as well as some great pointers and tips for consumers. And all of it’s written tongue-in-cheek.
Chainsaws 101: How To Safely Operate A Murdertoy
The article touches on a variety of topics as they relate to chainsaws. You can get a pretty good idea of the tone of the article right from the beginning as the title lets you know what you’re in for: Chainsaws 101: How To Safely Operate A Murdertoy. It sounds quite harsh but it’s well written and it’s a welcome change to have someone write about chainsaws in a humorous way. Let’s be honest, you don’t associate chainsaws with humor. At least I don’t.
He certainly touches upon an essential truth throughout the piece that openly acknowledges that chainsaws are one of the most dangerous power tools on the market and safe operating procedures should always be your number one priority every time you pick up your chainsaw. Samuel writes:
Equipment is also important. Some advocate for a face shield and full protective clothing; I’ve been able to get by with jeans, leather gloves, work glasses, and ear protection, but your desire to don jousting armor depends on your personal risk tolerance.
The writer seems to have a healthy fear of chainsaws which I think is a good perspective to have. An attitude of indifference towards chainsaws is almost a guarantee that you’ll get injured. Fear keeps you alert and aware that protecting yourself is a good idea — or, makes you realize that you should call a professional. Don’t let your ego get in the way.
It’s okay to admit you’re not the best person to limb those branches 30 feet above the ground. Samuel writes:
Trimming is difficult in proportion to the size and height of the limb. If it’s as big around as your chest and hanging 30 feet over your nursery, call a pro. Smaller stuff you’ll want to section from the outside in; cut from the top, and don’t be leaning on it.
