Electric wood splitters have many advantages over gas models but they have a limit to how much splitting force they can output. The 14-Ton model from SuperHandy (above) is one of the best electric wood splitters for the money. You may not be familiar with the brand as they’re a fairly new company, but they actually create above-average power equipment for less money than the competition. It has a 16-second cycle time and can split logs up to 20″ Long and 14″ wide. It’s impressive for an electric. We look at a range of models, mostly smaller, for homeowners.
An electric wood splitter is an essential tool to have around the yard if you split wood on a regular basis. Splitting wood with an axe is back breaking work that our ancestors have been doing since the Mesolithic era (6,000 BC).
In the 21st century, technology makes splitting wood easy and fast. Yes, axes are great for splitting a few logs once-in-a-while but if you have a lot of logs to split on a regular basis then an electric wood splitter is indispensable for homeowners.

Excellent Value: Top Selling 6.5 Ton Electric
Brand: BILT-HARD / 15A: Plug into a regular home outlet / Safe indoors
Bilt Hard is a newer brand so don’t be surprised if you’ve never heard of them. They managed to find the sweet spot with this model. As far as value goes, it’s one of the best electric wood splitters you can buy. It’s not the fastest, at 18 seconds between starting and finishing a single split. Some electric models are as fast 7.5 seconds. It’s available with our without the stand. Personally, I prefer to use a stand to allow me to work in a manner that doesn’t harm my back.
We cover this in more detail shortly. This is a simple introduction to one of the most popular log splitters. It’s been selling at a rapid pace. It’s a good value but not the fastest model you can buy. I guess it depends on what you’re looking for.
Comparing the Best Electric Wood Splitters
Many electric log splitters are very similar, especially in the common 6 to 7-Ton range. There are really only a few features that separate one from the other, but you should really pay attention to these features:
Now, let’s compare two of the best compact wood splitters:
BILT-HARD VS WEN 56208 / 6.5 Tons
BILT-HARD / 6.5 Ton
BILT-HARD is relatively unknown brand so you probably haven’t heard of them. They’ve managed to create a quality 6.5 ton electric log splitter that will do what you need it to do. There’s nothing remarkable about it, but it’s good little machine.
As with all electric splitters, you can use this indoors without any concern about fumes filling the air. On rainy or cold days you can simply split your logs in the garage. This is why I love anything electric — no maintenance, no fumes, quieter. These are all good things.
WEN 56208 / 6.5 Ton
WEN has been steadily improving this log splitter year over year, making this a nicely fine-tuned machine. The included stand separates this from almost every other electric splitter. I highly recommend using a compact splitter standing up for maximum comfort. You want to minimize putting strain on your back, a stand will do that for you.
The WEN 56208 is one of the best electric wood splitters you can buy. This is a solid, reliable model.
Benefits – Electric Wood Splitter
The benefits of using an electric wood splitter are numerous. The first thing I’m going to do is explain the facts about using an electric log splitter and then I’ll give you a detailed breakdown of my recommended electric wood splitters as well as give you a few options for gas wood splitters just in case you need some extra splitting power and speed for your projects.
YARDMAX YS0552 — Best 5-Ton Electric Log Splitter
The YARDMAX YS0552 has been a top selling electric log splitter for the past several years. It’s proven itself to be a standout in every way. It’s reliable, durable, compact and a light-duty workhorse. This isn’t designed for high volume wood splitting, so don’t buy it if you have a lot of wood to split, but for the more casual homeowner, this a great 15A splitter.
This is one of the rare models that includes a proper stand, and this is the main reason why it’s one of the best options for most homeowners. Safety and comfort should be your top concerns and with an integrated stand, it makes it easy for you to start working efficiently as soon as you assemble it. Excellent buy in 2023.
Compare : PowerHorse 8-Ton vs SuperHandy 6-Ton
Here are two more electric wood splitters that deserve your attention. The PowerHorse 66716 is a step up in quality compared to the majority of these splitters. It’s built with heavy-duty components and a more power 3 hp electric motor. It can split either vertically or horizontally, giving you more flexibility to choose the most efficient way to split a log.
PowerHorse 8-Ton / 66716
This PowerHorse is unique among many “me too” log splitters you’ll find. It’s strikes a nice balance as it has all of the convenience of electric power but gives you more power than a typical electrical and you get the option of horizontal or vertical, which you typically see on higher-end gas log splitters.
Incidentally, you might discover that an electric log splitter doesn’t have the power to split the size of logs you need. Maybe a gas splitter is right for you. Who knows.
SuperHandy 6-Ton
Another SuperHandy log splitter to consider because it does most things right. This is another competent compact electric wood splitter for not a lot of money. It’s a good value but no the best.
My recommendation is for the WEN or the YardMax because of the tall stand you get, but that’s my preference. Every log splitter I’m sharing with you are excellent. It all comes down to your splitting size needs and budget.
Why buy an Electric Wood Splitter?
A log splitter has one purpose — to split logs into firewood. It’s really that simple. Heating a home can be expensive and when the weather turns colds millions of people around the world use firewood to heat their homes. Or, in many cases, it’s just a matter of filling a room with the ambiance that only a fire can bring. There’s nothing more romantic than the warm glow of firewood burning on a cold winter night.
To learn more about firewood read: How much is a cord of wood? And other firewood facts.
Advantages of an Electric Wood Splitter
Let me just say that splitting logs with a splitting maul or splitting wedge is somewhat crazy if you do it on a regular basis. It’s laborious work that takes it’s toll on your body and over time you will feel the pain in your shoulders and back. If you heat your home with firewood it’s time to leave your old ways behind and rethink how you work. “Work smarter, not harder” is a philosophy that I live by.

OVERVIEW —-
The Earthquake 5-Ton is ideal for light-duty wood splitting, capable of splitting wood 10″ x 20-inches in length. It has been a popular model over the past several years and its high customer rating reflects that.
Earthquake is a very good brand which you may not be aware of. What I love about Earthquake products is that the company always stands behind what they sell by giving you a 5-year warranty. You won’t get 5 years with any other brand. This is an important fact that distinguishes Earthquake from all other brands. Five years is a long time to be covered from defects, especially on power equipment.
I highly recommend the 32228 by Earthquake. It’s on my list for the best 5-Ton electric log splitter.

Traditional Wood Splitting
Honestly, is it fun to split wood the old fashioned way? It’s a mind-numbing repetitive task and I can’t imagine anybody enjoying it. I guess that’s why I’m confused that people continue to use an axe when log splitters are readily available and very affordable.
A company actually created a new and refined axe called the LeverAxe which is apparently more efficient at splitting wood manually, but it costs as much as an electric log splitter so I have no idea why someone would choose the LeverAxe instead of a log splitter. It makes absolutely no sense to me.
I know some people enjoy using an axe, and I can understand that if it’s for low volume tasks, but for high volume production of firewood it seems silly to use an axe, but that’s my personal opinion. I happen to like tools because they makes labor-intensive jobs easy and enjoyable; not to mention a massive time saver.
The wonderful thing about the 21st century is that we’ve invented technology to do the dirty work for us.
There’s more information I need to cover to lay the groundwork for purchasing the best wood splitter but for those of you who are impatient, this is for you.

Which log splitter type should you buy?
Minimal Maintenance | Electric Wood Splitter
For homeowners, an electric log splitter is ideal for many reasons, with many advantages over a gas wood splitter. You see, the main issue I have with gas log splitters, or any other gas tool, is the fact that they require a lot of constant maintenance and most homeowners either don’t do it properly or don’t want to do it. Let’s be honest about this issue. The average homeowner doesn’t want to do maintenance!
If you decide to buy an electric wood splitter your life will be a whole lot easier. You don’t need to replace spark plugs, or change the oil, or fill it up with gasoline, or change the oil filter. And that’s just the obvious stuff. Let’s not forget, a gas log splitter emits fumes that you inhale, so from a general health point of view, an electric model is far more comfortable to be around and 100% clean burning.
Need more power : Read our guide on buying a 30-ton gas log splitter.
Boss Industrial ED10T20 / 10-Ton
An electric wood splitter is much quieter and easier on your ears. This isn’t a trivial matter. Sure, you can get hearing protection but it’s uncomfortable to be immersed in a noisy environment. It’s not a relaxing way to work. In all fairness, log splitters aren’t as noisy as some other gas tools, such as chainsaws.
Can be Used Indoors
The beauty of owning an electric wood splitter is you can use it indoors, preferably in your garage, basement, or barn. You can even use it in your living room if you want to. Day or night, in good or bad weather, if you need to split logs to make firewood you can do so in the comfort of an indoor space where it’s warm, well lit and where you won’t be overwhelmed by the smell of gas.
Electric Wood Splitter = Convenience + Affordability.
Compact & Lightweight | Electric Log Splitters
Electric splitters are also smaller and lighter so you can transport it fairly easy if you own a pick-up truck or a large SUV.
And, to top it all off, an electric wood splitter is cheaper to buy and more affordable for homeowners. As you’ll see in this article, you can buy a good electric log splitter for under $300. Try finding any gas log splitter that cheap — you won’t, because they don’t exist.
For homeowners, an electric wood splitter is the way to go. If you own a landscaping company or you work for municipality and you’re in charge of purchasing equipment for city workers (as an example) then you obviously need a heavy-duty log splitter, which means you need a gas model. I’ll have a few recommendations for you at the very end of this article.
I always stress the importance of matching your particular needs with the right tool. This is true for all things, even when buying a car, toaster or shoes. First determine what you’ll be using the tool for. What are your needs? How often will you be using the tool? Then match your requirements with the tool that will match your needs and expectations.
So homeowners, are you listening? Buy an electric wood splitter — unless you need to split large logs at a large volume, otherwise, stick to an electric splitter. A gas log splitter is for heavy-duty projects.
Horizontal vs Vertical vs Combo Wood Splitter
Log splitters come in three variations: vertical, horizontal and a 3rd type that can be used either vertically or horizontally. I refer to it as a ‘combo’ log splitter.
Horizontal | Electric Wood Splitter
Best for: Making firewood for burners, fires and stoves. Low volume of firewood. Small logs (under 14″ in diameter & under 21″ long).
A horizontal log splitter is ideal for for homeowners who want to split small logs that are relatively easy to lift and position on the log splitter. If the log splitter is low to the ground it’s going to be easier to place on your log splitter but it can be hard on your back because you’ll have to remain in a bent over position while it splits. Because of that, I prefer using an elevated electric log splitter for overall comfort and safety.
Some models are designed with a built-in stand and others have an optional stand that you buy separately for that particular model. For example the Boss Industrial ES7T20 has an optional stand as well as the Pow’ R’ Kraft 65556.
A horizontal electric log splitter is limited in the size of log it can handle. Generally speaking, an electric log splitter can handle wood under 14″ in diameter and under 21″ long. If you need to split anything larger then you’ll need to purchase a gas log splitter. Sorry, but electricity is limited in the force it can exert. Gas is superior when it comes to splitting power.
If you have a bad back I don’t recommend buying a horizontal log splitter unless it has a log lift. A log lift is a metal cradle (holding area) that can be lowered to the ground and filled with a log or multiple logs (depending on size). It’s operated by hydraulics which enables you to lift the wood up to a comfortable level so you can easily feed the machine for splitting.
Diagram | Log Lift / Cradle
A log splitter with a hydraulic lift is going to cost you more money but it will make your life much easier. You’ll have to buy a gas model for these advanced features. Although, if you have a bad back and you want to do the work yourself then you don’t really have an option, just buy a gas model. The last thing you want to do is waste your money on a wood splitter that will hurt your back. Safety and health should always be your number one concern.
Or, you can get someone else to do the work for you. That’s always an option.
Either way, the majority of electric log splitters are going to be horizontal. Horizontal machines that have built-in log lifts as well as a cradle to catch the split wood are the most productive and efficient wood splitters if you split big rounds (large full logs) on a regular basis. For most homeowners, you probably don’t need this setup. Stick to a simple electric wood splitter — unless you plan on splitting large amounts of wood.
You’ll see what I mean when I show you the specific models. We’ll get to that soon, I promise.
Vertical Wood Splitter
NorthStar 37-Ton Gas Splitter / Powerful
A vertical log splitter is more convenient to use overall as it split with the log upright while still on the ground. These models are made for larger logs where lifting them off the ground would be impossible or cause serious injury if you tried to lift it manually. Please don’t ever lift large logs by hand. You will eventually hurt yourself.
TIP: Use a chair or stool so you don’t have to constantly hunch over and strain your back.
Combo Horizontal / Vertical Wood Splitter
A vertical/horizontal wood splitter like the Swisher LSEK14534 gives you the best of both worlds. For small logs you can simply use the horizontal orientation but for the occasional large rounds that you can’t lift, you can switch to the vertical orientation and use it that way.
I want to reiterate that this type of log splitter is not necessary for the large majority of homeowners but there are many people who split a lot of wood all-year round so if you’re one of those, then a vertical/horizontal combo wood splitter would be perfect for your needs. You may only need to use it vertically 15% of the time but that’s okay because it allows you the flexibility to complete any shape and size of wood.
Again, know your needs then choose the right tool. I want to give you an overview of your options. The products I’m going to review are primarily electric wood splitters but I’ll show you some other choices just in case you realize that an electric log splitter won’t handle your needs.
Video | Log Splitter Safety
When operating your log splitter, wear safety gear such as goggles (or safety glasses), steel toed shoes and proper fitting gloves (without loose cuffs or draw strings). Splitting wood can be unpredictable so dress accordingly. You should also wear a protective hearing device. Safety is essential. Prevention is critical. These are inexpensive items and they can prevent a serious injury.
Some terms you should know
Cycle Time is a common phrase you need to know when shopping for a log splitter. The cycle time tells you how fast that particular log splitter takes to split a piece of wood.
Single-handed vs Two-handed operation: Log splitters are potentially dangerous tools and require your full attention when you’re using it. Because of this fact, manufacturers may force you to use both hands to operate the log splitter in order to ensure that you don’t have a free hand that could potentially get caught in the moving blade. It’s a safety measure for your own protection but you can also buy single-handed log splitters.
Tonnage / Splitting Force: This refers to the amount of force the log splitter exerts on the log. The higher the tonnage the greater the splitting force, enabling it to effectively split larger and harder wood. Different types of wood have their own ‘hardness’ level. More about that later.
You don’t want to attempt to split a hard (green), thick, hardwood log with a small log splitter. It’s important to know how much splitting force (rated in tons) you need.
Video | Benefits of using a log splitter:
If you want to learn more about how a log splitter operates I recommend reading this short overview on How Stuff Works explaining the hydraulic system of log splitters. Or watch this video explaining how a wood splitter works.
Extension Cords Matter
If you want to understand how to choose the right extension cord then read our buying guide for extension cords. But, for the sake of saving you time I’m going to tell you exactly what you need.
Why Extension Cords Matter?
For any of these electric wood splitters you need to use a 12-Gauge extension cord. Don’t bother buying a higher gauge (14, 16, etc). The extension cord rating that you use with these splitters truly does matter. If you use the wrong rating then your log splitter won’t operate at its maximum power and it will run hotter, affecting the lifespan of your product.
The higher the gauge rating, the thinner the internal wire of the extension cord. A lower number gauge rating has a thicker internal wire. I know it’s counter-intuitive but whoever designed the rating system was probably drunk when he or she came up with it.
Either way, a high amperage motor (15 Amps), like these electric log splitters, require a lot of electricity (power) to run properly and therefore, they need thick wires (Gauge rating) to deliver the electricity. A thin wire (IE. 16 gauge) can’t handle the electricity draw of a log splitter and therefore will heat up and so will your tool.
If your extension cord doesn’t deliver enough power to the electric motor, the motor will run hot and overheat. If you allow the heat to maintain or increase then there’s a high probability of burning out your motor, which is obviously a bad thing.
If you already have a 12-Gauge extension cord then use that, but if you don’t, either buy one at your hardware store or you can buy it online. It’s up to you. Again, if you don’t understand the difference between different types of extension cords read our guide.
✓ Good to know: As electricity travels farther away from the outlet (power source) its energy diminishes. So, if you use a 100 foot extension cord it’s best to buy a lower gauge cord (thicker wire) to compensate for this. Also, a coiled extension cord creates more resistance and slows down the flow of electricity, so straighten out your extension cord to get the most out of your tools.
Extension Cord Length?
Here are my three recommendations for extension cords. I recommend a shorter cord if you don’t need to be far away from an electric outlet. For example, if you’re splitting wood in your garage you don’t need a 100 foot extension cord. I recommend a 25-Foot 12 gauge cord.
All three extension cords that I recommend are reasonably priced and meet the criteria for all of the electric log splitters in this article.
US Wire 74025 | 25-Foot Extension Cord
Features:
- Heavy Duty. Flexible when cold.
- Lighted Plug indicates power is flowing.
- 12 Gauge/25 Feet/15 Amp
- Lifetime Limited Warranty
US Wire 65050 | Extension Cord
Features:
- 50 feet. 12-Gauge.
- Medium Flexibility.
- Lifetime Limited Warranty.
100 Feet / 10 Gauge | Extension Cord
If you want a 100-foot extension cord it’s safer (and best) to go with a 10-gauge. These log splitters draw a lot of current and you want to minimize heat as much as possible. The only way to do that is to use the proper extension cord so the inner wire is thick enough to handle the current.
Features:
- Flame retardant, water and abrasion resistant.
- Protected by industrial grade vinyl (maximum flexibility in cold temperatures).
- UL and OSHA certified.
- Weight: 18lbs.
- Outlets: Single Tap Made with pure SJTW Stranded Copper Fitted with heavy brass connectors.
- One-piece molded ends.
- Heavy-duty Strain Relief to prevent cord/plug separation.
- 100 feet. 10-Gauge.

The unit will automatically stop functioning as soon as even one hand is removed. If you like having a total sense of control while operating your splitter and want an optimal amount of safety, this is a great feature to look for.
Two-hand designs are simple enough for any adult to use. This particular cutter can split large quantities of logs within a very nominal amount of time. It takes just six seconds to split a 20 1/2″ log with a 12″ diameter and just five seconds for the ram to return to its original position, allowing for rapid loading speeds.
The XM-380 is surprisingly lightweight at just 104 pounds. When the cold weather hits, you can easily bring it inside by grabbing its built-in handle and rolling it along on its two, sturdy front wheels. You can use the XM-380 in the garage or on your patio or porch. You won’t have to brave the bitter cold to get your log splitting done and you can still have plenty of firewood to see you through even the coldest of winters.
For those in the habit of overpowering their log-splitting units, this one has a nice, built-in feature to reset its performance. Once overloaded, the unit motor simply needs to be power cycled to return it to standard operation.
This top-quality, electric firewood splitter is a standout model among those with big winter cutting jobs, ranches to heat or large homes with multiple firepits or fireplaces. With its built-in automatic retraction and mandatory two-hand operation, it is even possible to reposition wood as necessary when cutting through pieces that have crossing grains or tough, y-shaped branches.

The relatively low-sitting design of the unit also means that pieces don’t have to be lifted very high for loading and once they’re cut, they don’t have far to fall. You’ll get all of the efficiency of a gas-powered unit, minus the back pain that most low-sitting models cause. Best of all, you won’t have to invest in any secondary stands or rig one up of your own in order to bring your splitter to an acceptable height.

Overview | Boss ED10T20
The Boss ED10T20 has been called the most powerful electric log splitter in its class. With ten full tons of splitting force, this model is ideal for both larger cleanup jobs on properties with downed trees and splitting logs at home. If you’ve got a ranch to run or are heavily reliant upon wood for heat, this option is well-worth considering.
It boasts two-way splitting capabilities that cut job times down significantly. This splitter can power through logs with a 12″ diameter and a 20.5″ length in mere seconds. Best of all, users don’t have to bend or hunch over to load logs in given its nearly waist-high design. There are even built-in log racks that catch logs split by each side of the wedge so that these never actually reach the ground.
Not only can you remain upright while loading this electric log splitter, but you’ll also bend a lot less to stack your splits. This unit has an easy, push-button start and needs a 20 amp, 115v circuit due to its tremendous power and impressive capabilities.
Toss out your Axe! Watch this…
Although it weighs 214 pounds, making it heavier than most home units, the Boss ED10T20 has two sturdy wheels that make transporting it a cinch. You can break down fallen foliage, cut wood for the winter and put your unit on the back of the truck to handle tougher jobs on commercial property.
When it comes to flexibility, this log splitter has it all. It is guaranteed to outperform many gas-fired models while remaining far quieter and far easier to maintain. The Boss ED10T20 is high-performing enough to split all of the wood necessary for heating a medium to large-sized home or a modest ranch. It’s quiet and with proper wood positioning, it will move through knots and crossing grains with relative ease.

With two-operating speeds the Pow’ R’ Kraft 65575 is the perfect electric log splitter for consumers with both large and small splitting jobs to tackle. It is capable of splitting logs up to 20″ long and 12″ in diameter and powers through both well-seasoned and fresh-cut wood with ease. In fact, it even goes through dense, compact woods such as Pecan and Texas Mesquite.
One of the most popular features of this powerful log splitter is its extremely quiet operation. It has a ZHB control system that necessitates two-hand use for optimal safety and is perfect for outside jobs or cutting in the basement, garage or barn. The Pow’ R’ Kraft 65575 15 amp, 7-ton model operates on a standard household current and its own, built-in ground fault breaker for preventing unit overload.
One of the top benefits of using this durable, hefty unit is that logs will ride comfortably in the work table and won’t slip out, even if these aren’t cut at a ninety degree angle. This unit works best, however, on dry, well-seasoned wood for the fire pit or indoor and outdoor fireplaces. It has a forward cycle time of 14 seconds and a reverse cycle time of just 10 seconds.
The maximum, 7-ton force can be used to start splits while the much faster, four-ton force can be used to complete the split. With its large wheels and relatively lightweight design, it is additionally easy to position and reposition this unit when using it in various indoor areas or in cramped outdoor spaces.
This electric splitter is also small enough to be elevated by placing it in a small rolling art. Although the unit has durable wheels of it own, elevating it in a cart will limit the amount of bending and lifting that must be done while splitting logs or moving from an indoor work station to an outdoor work area.
Given its impressive power, this is the unit that you want when transitioning from a heavy-duty, gas-powered option.

Extra | Gas / Hydraulic Log Splitters
An electric wood splitter may not meet your needs if you demand high volume splitting of large logs, especially if they’re hardwoods. In that case you’ll be forced to spend more money and buy a gas log splitter. The benefits you get with one of these wood splitters is speed and power. Unfortunately, electric splitters are limited in the amount of force they output.
Here are a few great options if you need something more powerful.
