Note: Earthquake generators are now sold under the brand Porta Source. I’m not sure if they just changed their name or were purchased by Porta Source. Either way, the IG800W is still the exact same model with Porta Source as the brand name. Product links have been updated accordingly.
Check this link to purchase the original Earthquake IG800W. It seems to be back on the market.
Update (Nov 11, 2016): It appears that Earthquake is once again selling the IG800W inverter generator, so to be honest, I’m confused. I would stick with the Earthquake model. If you have some information regarding these generators please contact us and we’ll update accordingly.
Before we get into the original article, I will recommend reading our newer article : The Best Inverter Generator (Buying Guide). It is comprehensive and will give you a wide range of options for inverter generators, backed up by in-depth information to help you make a smart buying decision.
Now, carry on with the article: Earthquake/Porta Source IG800W…
Let me start this review by stating that the Porta Source IG800W Inverter Generator is an exceptional bargain. You get a high-quality portable generator for not a lot of money — it’s inexpensive but not cheap and compares favorably to higher-end (and more expensive) inverter generators on the market, such as the Yamaha EF2000iS, which I reviewed a few months ago.
The Earthquake IG800W is a super quiet (58 dB) 800-Watt inverter generator that will quickly become your perfect companion whenever you need the freedom and power of a portable generator. Perfect for camping, emergency back-up, remote job sites, field work, your RV, or for any other reason you need power on the go.
The Earthquake IG800W is powered by a 40cc 4-Cycle OHV Viper Engine (CARB Compliant) which has a solid state ignition, cast iron cylinder bore, and heavy duty roller bearings on both the magneto and PTO ends of the crankshaft for long life and durability. These are smooth running engines that start easily, and are designed to be very efficient.
Earthquake IG800W | High Quality
The Earthquake IG800W is made with high quality electrical output components that allow you to safely power sensitive electronics. The IG800W creates a ‘pure sine wave‘ enabling you to safely charge sensitive electronics like phones, tablets and laptops. These components eliminate the choppy, surging power that a less sophisticated generator will deliver.
The other type of generator that you’ll find on the market use a modified sine wave and although these products are cheaper, they’re also quite limited in their usage. A pure sine wave inverter is capable of powering all of your electrical devices with clean power that won’t cause noise, distortion or otherwise damage your electronics — and because of that, they’re very quiet — as is the case with the Earthquake IG800W. A modified sine wave is not appropriate for a long list of devices and therefore I don’t recommend them for most homeowners.
Another popular inverter generator is the Honda EU1000i, and the Earthquake generator is equally quiet — as quiet as a normal conversation. Oh, also the Earthquake IG800W is a fraction of the cost. I love discovering affordable products that are well-made and then writing about them for consumers. My goal is to review only the best products that you can rely on to get the job done. Honestly, the Earthquake IG800W personifies my reason for creating Chainsaw Journal.
Fuel Efficient, capable of running for 14 hours on one gallon of fuel. Make sure you use a minimum 87 octane gasoline with No Ethanol. That’s what the manufacturer recommends.
Besides all the great features, this inverter generator is made for portability. At only 21 lbs, you can haul it almost anywhere. It’s been engineered to be easily transported to remote places or if you simply want portable power for your needs.
You won’t have to move the Earthquake IG800W inverter generator far from your activity — it really is that quiet. It’s made with durable noise suppressing housing.

When you look at everything you get with this inverter generator you’d be foolish not to realize the bargain that this is. Earthquake (now Porta Source) is a brand that has been growing rapidly while offering the best bang for your dollar when it comes to lawn and garden products. It’s not a high profile brand but the Earthquake IG800W is a very well designed product that won’t let you down when you need it the most.
