Are Indoor Heaters Worth It?
Don’t forget you’ll feel toasty if you crank up your central heating too. You definitely don’t buy one simply to stay warm. There are lots of factors you’ve got to take into consideration. Here are a few reasons why the best indoor heaters for large rooms are worth it
Your Energy Bills Will End Up Dropping – The main reason you’ll use an indoor heater is because of zonal heating. When you turn your central heating up it’s going to heat your entire home. A portable heater is only going to heat up the room you’re using it in.
This means you’ll be able to lower the overall temperature of your home. Why bother keeping it warm in winter when you don’t use most of the rooms? If you do want additional warmth turn an indoor heater on and your energy bills will drop lower than ever before.
Great Heater for large rooms up to 1000 sq.ft. | Duraflame DFI-5010-01
Each Family Member Will Be Much Happier – Think about everything we’ve just said in regards to your energy bills. You don’t want to turn your central heating up, but at the same time you can’t lower it without affecting family members in a negative way.
When everyone has an indoor heater available you won’t need to. You can still lower the thermostat and each person will get to decide what temperature is comfortable for them. It really is the only way to keep the entire family happy.
You Will Be Protecting The Environment – This is an area lots of people seem to have an interest in these days. Cordless power tools are replacing gas-powered models. Vertical farming is growing rapidly in popularity around the country too.
We all want to protect the environment and becoming more energy efficient is a good way to do it. Nobody is trying to say it’s our number one concern, but when you can save the planet while pocketing more money there are no downsides.
Types of Indoor Heaters
It’s Easy Moving Them From Room To Room – Let’s say you’ve turned down the thermostat because you have an indoor heater. What will you do if you want to move into another room? You won’t want to be trapped in the same room all the time.
Luckily the best indoor heaters for large rooms are usually extremely portable. If you can’t pick them up you’ll still be able to transport them around on wheels. Moving them will only become a problem when you decide to mount one on your wall.
You’ll Be Extremely Warm Within Minutes – Even if you turned the temperature up when you got home it would take a while to reach your desired comfort level. Setting a timer only really works when you know the exact time you’ll arrive home each day.
That means there is a good chance you’ll be cold for a while if you rely on central heating. Portable indoor heaters will warm up rooms much quicker. It will depend on the specific model you buy, but you could feel warm within a few minutes.
Rooms Might Not Have Any Central Heating – There will be rooms inside your home where there is zero central heating. The garage is always a good example to use. Some people will want to use their garage on a regular basis even in the colder months.
They might use it as a workshop where they spend hours every night. You’ll need one of the best indoor heaters for large rooms or you won’t be able to work. The same kind of thing could apply to a number of areas throughout your home.
How To Switch From Watts To British Thermal Units
You’ll find electric and gas heaters on the market, so it’s sometimes hard to work out how they compare to each other. You do see a lot of electric models rated at 1,500 watts and we’ll use that number to figure out the BTU equivalent:
- Step 1 – Find out the indoor heater wattage rating, which in this case would be 1,500 watts.
- Step 2 – Multiple the number of watts in Step 1 by 3.41, so you’ll end up with 5,115 BTUs per hour.
- Step 3 – Look for gas models with a rating of roughly 5,115 BTU when you’re looking at heaters.

A big part of the reason why it’s able to produce so much heat comes down to 6 superior wrapped quartz elements inside it. These will also let the infrared heater warm up a lot quicker than they usually do.
Quiet Scroll Motor Fan Distributes Heat
If you’re going to tackle large rooms the heat will need a way to get around. It won’t be hard when you switch this Lifesmart model on, because the fan will push air to the other side of any room.
The biggest downside with fans is usually the noise they make. This one is quiet and you won’t notice it. The washable filter is an equally exceptional component because it will last forever.
It Includes Three Energy Saving Settings
There are 3 energy saving settings, but ECO mode is the most interesting one. It’s the ideal setting when you want to heat up a small room. It will reach a temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit.
When on ECO mode you’ll only be using a total of 500 watts, which is half the amount of watts an iron uses. Even when it’s using 1,500 watts you’ll never burn yourself touching the wooden cabinet.
There Is A 12 Hour Start And Stop Timer
Sometimes you won’t want to wait for your heater to warm up. Thanks to a 12 hour start and stop timer built into the Lifesmart LS-1000X-6W-IN you won’t have to. It’s easy to preprogram everything in advance.
It works in 1 hour increments too, so if you don’t want to keep the indoor heater on all day you won’t need to touch it non-stop. You shouldn’t need to program anything more than 12 hours ahead of time.
You Can Control Everything With A Remote
The buttons are located on a control panel and they’re easy to see. You’ll be able to access them quickly too, but that doesn’t mean you’ll have to. You might prefer to use the large remote control instead.
It’s got everything you’ll need to change the temperature when you don’t want to get up. As long as you can see the temperature reading on the control panel you’ll be able to use it from anywhere inside a room.
Comes Built Into A Stylish Wooden Cabinet
When you buy one of the best indoor heaters for large rooms it’s not only about what’s inside it. You want the unit to look aesthetically-pleasing too, because it’s going to become a part of your furniture.

The Mr. Heater MHVFB30NGT is powered by natural gas and has the ability to heat up rooms around 750 square feet in size. It has a rating of 30,000 BTUs, which is more than enough for most small homes.
This particular model has a blue flame burner that looks a little like a fire. The battery-powered electrical ignition will ensure it doesn’t have any trouble starting straight away every single time.
Automatic Low Oxygen Shut-Off System (ODS)
Vent free gas heaters aren’t exactly popular with some people for obvious reasons. It’s why manufacturers should strive to include safety features when designing their indoor heaters.
Mr. Heater added an automatic low oxygen shut-off system to the MHVFB30NGT. An oxygen depletion sensor (ODS) is basically a type of valve capable of cutting the gas when it detects a drop of oxygen in the room.
Will Work In The Middle Of A Power Outage
Look at the amount of storms lots of people are facing right now. There is no way to tell when you’ll suddenly lose power, which will be devastating in winter when it’s freezing cold.
You don’t need any external power to run the Mr. Heater MHVFB30NGT, so it will keep you warm when there is an outage. Unfortunately, it’s not good in any situations if you live 4,500 feet above sea level.
The Thermostat Offers You Superior Control
Did you know some extremely cheap indoor heaters don’t have a thermostat built into them? You have to go through the hassle of turning a knob until you’re happy. This model gives you a thermostat for superior control.
You’ll always know the exact temperature inside your room. It’s possible to keep it the same no matter what it’s like outside. You’ll appreciate it once you find a temperature you feel comfortable with.
It Comes With Legs And Wall Mount Hardware
If you want to move your heater around it shouldn’t cause you any trouble. The unit only weighs 26.8 pounds and it will sit on legs capable of keeping it stable even if you bump into it.
Another option is to mount the heater on your wall, which should be easy as it comes with all the hardware you’ll need. The overall dimensions of the unit are only 23.8 x 11.2 x 27 inches.
Integrated Blower Doesn’t Make Much Noise
Blue flame heaters usually let the warm air float up into the ceiling. It will then eventually make its way around your room. The Mr. Heater MHVFB30NGT gives you the option of adding an integrated blower.
It will help to push hot air around rooms a lot quicker and it’s a feature you’ll love. As an added bonus, it hardly makes any noise compared to blowers on most heaters so it won’t frustrate you.

The biggest feature on this particular model has to be the patent pending 3D flame effect technology. Not only does it look identical to a fire, but you’ll be able to play around with it.

If you care about maximum safety the HCX9115E is one of the best indoor heaters for large rooms you’ll find at this price point. The biggest safety feature has to be the tip-over protection.

Comes With A Soft Touch LED Control Panel
A soft touch LED control panel is where you’ll get to take advantage of all the different settings. You’ll know the temperature straight away because it will be displayed in bright numbers above the buttons.

This is partly down to the new panel design creating a 25 percent larger radiant surface than its predecessor. The patented thermal chimneys we’ll touch on later are engineered to maximize heat flow too.
The Oil System Inside Can Never Be Opened
You’ll never be able to access the oil inside the Dragon 4 because it’s permanently sealed up. It’s one of the big benefits oil filled radiators offer you. Maintenance work that wastes time is almost nonexistent.
It’s made from tough metal, which is why the oil will never seep out. The durability will also extend its life, plus it’s rust-resistant so you don’t have to worry about its looks diminishing with age.
Patented Thermal Chimneys Keep Surface Cool
The patented thermal chimneys we just talked about don’t just help speed up the heating process. They also have the ability to maintain a low surface temperature, which you’ll need if you don’t want burned.
It’s another particularly great model if you have kids and pets, especially because it’s oil filled. If the surface temperature wasn’t cool you could still get hurt long after it was switched off.
Thermal Cutoff Guarantees It Won’t Overheat
If your indoor heater overheats it could potentially cause a huge amount of damage, so safety features have been built into the DeLonghi TRD40615T. It’s never going to reach the stage where it gets too hot.
The thermal cutoff will deal with any issues, plus you can only set the temperature so high. It also has an anti-freeze safety feature designed to do the exact opposite. It switches on when it drops below 42 degrees Fahrenheit.

The oil filled heater doesn’t actually have any moving parts, which is amazing considering how quickly it can heat large rooms. I guess DeLonghi decided to use advanced technology instead of opting for fans.

The Ultimate Portable Indoor Heater For Your Home
We’ve covered some of the best indoor heaters for large rooms today and they’re all different. You now need to decide which one is the right choice for you. Everything we’ve mentioned should help you come to a decision.
If you’re still unsure you should click on the links to read all the reviews on Amazon. They’re completely unbiased and past customers have spent time writing them for you. It won’t take long until you find the right one.
Sometimes Indoor Heaters Aren’t Worth Buying
If you use portable indoor heaters the wrong way you’ll end up with huge energy bills. It defeats the purpose of buying one in the first place. You have to make sure they’re being used in partnership with your central heating. Let’s look at a few rules you should follow:
You Need To Turn Down The Thermostat – We’ve mentioned this a few times because it’s the number one rule. Unless you’re using an indoor heater in a room without central heating you must adjust your thermostat accordingly to save any money.
Try To Buy An Energy Efficient Model – In a while we’re going to look at the best indoor heaters for large rooms, but you’ll already know they’re not created equally. If you want to save the maximum amount of money you need to look for an energy efficient model.
Don’t Walk Around With No Clothes On – You’ll always need to turn the temperature up if you’re walking around in winter with no clothes on. Before you decide to turn an indoor heater on make sure you’re wearing enough layers of clothing.
How An Indoor Heater Works
This can be broken down into lots of different categories depending on the heater, but we’ll try to keep it as simple as possible. The best indoor heaters for large rooms will warm you up in one of two ways. Here are the options you’ll get to choose from when buying a heater:
Convection Heating – Blue flame heaters and oil filled radiators both fall into this category even though they work in different ways. They’ll both send hot air into a room once it’s been warmed up and it will circulate all around it.
Infrared Heating – Infrared heaters work in a completely different way because they don’t heat up the air directly. They’ll warm up objects in the direct line of the heater and after a while the air will eventually warm up a little too.
Advantages & Disadvantages Of Various Heaters
In a while we’re going to look at some infrared, convector, and oil filled heaters. It makes sense to go over a few advantages and disadvantages of each one. Let’s look at some information that might help you decide which model to go with:
Infrared Heater | Advantages
The Humidity In Your Room Won’t Be Affected – An infrared heater won’t affect the humidity in the air because it targets people and objects. It protects your wooden furniture and houseplants, plus humid air reduces your heating costs even more.
Infrared Heat Will Help Improve Your Health – The extra humidity has lots of health benefits too. Infrared heat lets you enjoy the positives of natural sunlight minus dangerous UV radiation. It has the power to promote healthier blood circulation.
Infrared Heater | Disadvantages
Heat Will Disappear Quickly Once It’s Off – When you don’t heat the air directly it causes a big problem. Once you switch an infrared heater off the heat will disappear very quickly. It’s never going to linger around like what you’d usually expect.
All Radiant Heat Travels In A Direct Line – Some infrared heaters will warm a room easily, but radiant heat will always travel in a direct line. It’s going to have a negative impact inside any room where you’ll have to move around a lot.
Convector Heater | Advantages
Less Need To Be As Careful With Furniture – You can’t keep furniture too close to infrared heaters because they heat up objects. You don’t have this problem with convection heaters, so you’ll have more freedom when deciding where to sit them.
You Will Be Able To Walk Around Your Room – You’ll feel warm when an infrared heater hits you, but it can’t do it efficiently when you’re walking around. The air inside a room will be warm no matter where you are when using a convection heater.
Convector Heater | Disadvantages
Not Ideal If Rooms Are Not Well-Insulated – Convection heaters aren’t great when used in rooms where you’ll open windows and doors a lot. They heat up air and it’s obviously going to escape, whereas infrared models target objects.
It Takes A Bit Longer To Heat Yourself Up – This disadvantage also relates to convection heaters warming up air inside rooms. It’s going to take a while to do this even with a fan. Infrared heat will warm you up quicker once it’s been switched on.
Oil Filled Heater | Advantages
You’ll Be Warm In The Middle Of The Night – Once the oil is heated up it won’t suddenly cool down when the heater is switched off. You might not want to keep indoor heaters on when you’re asleep, so it’s a good option if you want to stay warm all night.
There Won’t Be Any Noises To Disturb You – When the oil warms up it will release hot air into rooms slowly. It won’t contain any fans to distribute the heat, which means your heater will be so quiet it’s never going to get on your nerves.
Oil Filled Heater | Disadvantages
It Takes A Long Time To Heat The Oil Up – In winter you won’t be able to rush inside to warm yourself up. It’s not going to provide you with any warmth until the oil is hot. If you’re not prepared to wait you should look at other options.
The Heat Will Stay In Your Room Forever – I know we’ve just listed this as an advantage, but it’s definitely a disadvantage too. Sometimes you’ll want any heat to disappear quickly. It’s never going to happen if you own an oil filled heater.
Please Note: There are more advantages and disadvantages we could have discussed, but they won’t necessarily apply to every model. Just be aware every heater we look at today is well-worth your money. We can’t review every model on the market but we do look at many factors when deciding on the best indoor heater for large rooms.
