Even if you have not owned or used a pressure washer previously, you must have seen one of them in action somewhere since they are quite popular these days in both commercial as well as industrial applications. A pressure washer, or as some people prefer to call it- “power washer”, is basically a mechanical device that is engineered to output a stream or jet of water at extremely high pressure and velocity. So, kind of like a garden hose- but with 30-40 times the pressure and about 5-8 times the flow rate.

Water is a remarkable fluid as it is capable of so many things, and even though it is a light compound in comparison to some of the other heavier fluids, there is one property of water that makes it an amazing cleaning agent – each water molecule is comprised of one oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms.
The opposite poles of a water molecule carry opposing electrical charges thanks to the ionic bond formed between positively charged hydrogen atoms and negatively charged oxygen atoms. This means that each water molecule acts like a little scrubber as it slides over a dirty surface, the charged poles cling to impurities and drag them away. Not only that, but water is also an amazing solvent and is also called the “universal solvent” because it can dissolve more substances than any other liquid.
But what does this have to do with pressure cleaning? If water is such a good cleaning agent on its own, can’t you just take your garden hose or a bucket of water and wash down whatever it is that you plan on washing? Well, that works on some things such as furniture and dirty clothes but try washing a mud-stained 4×4 vehicle after a grueling day of off-road driving with a garden hose – you will quickly realize that you need a more powerful jet of water than the one that your garden hose provides.
Try removing the mold and mildew from your wooden patio with a bucket of water and common hose – it just won’t do the job. In situations like these, you need a little more “punch”. Normal atmospheric pressure at sea level is 14.70 pounds per square inch (psi). A pressure washer can output a constant stream of water at 100-300 times the standard sea level atmospheric pressure (anywhere between 1500-4500 psi depending on the type and size of the pressure washer).
Most commercial or consumer grade power/ pressure washers can hurl jets of water at pressures as high as 2000-2500 psi. Industrial grade diesel powered pressure washers are designed to pump out high velocity streams of water at over 3000-3500 psi, and some extreme ones can even reach 4500 psi. These are the pressure washers which are used to clean up sewage ducts, aircraft fleets, factory floors, etc.
So exactly how does a pressure washer work? Is there any difference between a pressure washer and a power washer? Both questions will be answered in detail within later sections of this article, but for now all you need to know is that a pressure washer is basically a motor + pump + nozzle combination. The motor (can be gas or electric) pulls in water from an input source (for the average home user this will be a tap/ faucet), forces it through the pump where it gains the velocity, and then it is pushed out through an output pipe and attachment that contains a nozzle to restrict flow and increase pressure.
Even though the average consumer may refer to a pressure washer as a “power washer” and vice versa, there is one fundamental difference between the two, that although minor, greatly affects the situations in which you can use the respective devices. All power washers are a type of pressure washer, but not all pressure washers are power washers.

Let’s say you need a professional grade pressure washer at the price of a premium consumer model. Meet the Simpson Cleaning PS3228-S. The way Simpson Cleaning decides upon model names is as follows – they take the series or lineup initials, in this case it is a pressure washer from the PowerShot series, so the initials will be “PS”. Then, they take the first two numbers from the PSI rating, add in the GPM rating after removing the decimal.
It is not all that complicated after all, you can understand the pressure and flow ratings for each model just by looking at the model number. The PS3228-S is rated at a massive 3200 psi of pressure and can sustain a 2.8 GPM flow rate. This is not the most powerful industrial grade pressure washer by any means, in fact its pressure and flow ratings are on the lower end of the spectrum as far as industrial pressure washers are considered.
However, it comes at the price point of a high end commercial model. Simpson Cleaning delivers pressure washers in two separate categories: Premium Residential and Commercial/ Industrial. The “Premium Residential” category is covered by their PowerShot series and features pressure washers with a pressure rating between 2800 to 3200 psi, with flow rates between 2.3 to 2.5 GPM.

The extremely high pressure is capable of stripping away paint if you don’t use the right nozzles, so make sure to use at the 40° or soaping nozzle for vehicle cleaning since even the widest sprays pack enough punch to take out hardened mud and tough stains at close range (we are dealing with a massive 3200 psi of pressure). The PS3228-S is powered by the legendary Honda GX200 commercial series engine, a motor renowned for its low operating noise, power, reliability, light weight, and efficiency.
The pump is an industrial triplex plunger model from AAA, extremely well-built and silent in operation. The entire frame is constructed from welded steel, so you will find the whole frame to be very stable and easy to work with. There are 10” pneumatic wheels on the base for convenient transportation. Yes, but only in certain applications.
How much of a difference is there between 3.3 GPM and 3.5 GPM? Well, the latter is slightly better for cleaning larger areas since you clean faster with more water. Here is the deal – the PS4033 delivers less water with higher pressure while the PS3835 delivers more water with less pressure. Meaning that the PS4033 is better for contractors and cleaners who need to clean up stuff like graffiti, do paint restoration, wood restoration, etc.
The Simpson PS4033 is more expensive because of its more advanced pump even though it shares the same engine as the PS3835. It weighs 131 pounds, and all of that weight is supported by a welded steel frame, solid steel axles, and 13” pneumatic wheels.

The Briggs & Stratton model 20545 pressure washer is designed to be used for cleaning your porch and deck, fences, outdoor furniture, driveways, car, bike, etc. It packs a generous 2200 psi and comes with one of one of the best engines that you can get in a gasoline operated pressure washer at this price range. There is a detergent injection system built into the Briggs & Stratton model 20545 for convenient detergent siphoning. This feature comes in handy when you are trying to clean a greasy surface or some very stubborn stains off your vehicle and/ or outdoor furniture.
A maintenance – free axial cam pump unit ensures that you never need to take the pump apart for cleaning, and you surely don’t have to worry about changing the pump oil since everything is sealed up and self-greasing. The 550e Series OHV engine used in this pressure washer was designed and developed inhouse by Briggs & Stratton. This 4-stroke gasoline motor features a 140cc displacement, generates 5.5 ft-lbs of torque (gross torque value), and is supported by a nice little 0.2-gallon fuel tank.
Keep in mind that this is just the fuel tank, not the engine oil tank which is located separately, so you better not be thinking about dumping the oil into the fuel tank. Even though this little 50-pound pressure washer is extremely easy to operate and very reliable, we recommend you look at the owner’s manual before starting it up and attaching the hoses.
Little mistakes like not bleeding the residual air out of the hose prior to turning the unit on, or mixing up the oil and fuel together in the same tank (this is not a 2-stroke motor, it is 4-stroke) can cause damage to the pump and motor over a period, resulting in expensive repair costs in the future.
Although pressure output cannot be adjusted, you still get 3 nozzle tips (0°, 25° and soap) to play with, and all three of those support quick-connect. The high-pressure hose is threaded for M22 attachment and is 25 feet long. The unit also includes a thermal release valve for added safety, and the consumer warranty is for 2-years.
If you choose the Briggs & Stratton 20545 for commercial applications though, keep in mind that this pressure washer only has a 90-day commercial warranty. Even so, with a flow rate of 1.9 GPM and 2200 psi of pressure, we can’t really recommend this little washer for any commercial applications. The frame is made from tubular steel and rolls upon a pair of nice little 10” never go flat wheels.

When we hear the word “Ford”, we normally think about the company Ford Motors. However, there are many of you who are completely unaware of the fact that Ford does in fact, have a power equipment division as well. They make generators, pressure washers, and pumps for industrial, commercial and home applications.
The model in focus over here is a home purpose/ commercial pressure washer with a maximum psi rating of 2700 (186 bar), and a rated maximum flow rate of 2.3 GPM or 522 L/h. It packs a giant 3L (0.79 gallon) fuel tank, and is powered by a Ford 180cc, 4-stroke single cylinder gasoline motor that is started via a recoil system (pull cord). While this engine is not the most silent of all the pressure washer engines out there in the sub-200cc segment, it is rather quite at about 66 Dba under load (observed from 7m).
To give you an idea of how loud 66 dBA is, it is louder than a conversation at 3-feet but quieter than a shower.
One of the best features of a Ford pressure washer must be the build quality. These things are designed to last, and each one of them is tested thoroughly before it leaves the factory. Everything about this Ford pressure washer feels well-built, from the 1-1/4” powder coated steel tube frame to the foam grip handle that ensures you never feel uncomfortable while towing this 80+ pound hunk of metal along with you.
The color scheme is Ford blue on a matted black frame. Handles can be folded down to minimize overall dimensions and make the storage area much more compact. Talking of storage area, it comes with 4 nozzle tips- 0°, 15°, 25°, and 40°. There is an on-board 5-liter detergent tank mounted in the front section of the carriage frame. It has a cap on top of the tank that you can open to pour in the detergent. The pump is a 3-pistion axial cam type manufactured by Annovi Reverberi, and it is both extremely reliable as well as silent in operation.
The rear of the storage area holds your high-pressure hose, which measures ¼” ID x 25’. It is attached via M22 couplers to the pump and attachments, the primary attachment being a 20” long steel wand with a 0.25” QC coupler. For safety and ease of operation, the pump is equipped with a thermal relief valve, chemical injector, and an EZ-start valve. The entire body is supported upon 10” x 2” No Flat foam tires with heavy duty hubs, and these wheels are connected by a zinc plated short axle with hitch pin.
From a historical perspective, Ford isn’t known for their pressure washers but slowly they are gaining a foothold in the market and the Ford FPWG2700H-J is one of the best power washers for the money.

The consumer market is flooded with affordably priced 2000-2500 psi pressure washers that are fully capable of handling the needs of your average home owner. They can clean the dirt and mud off your car, clear the debris from your driveway, and spray the garage floor with soapy water. But there is a difference between “getting the job done” and “doing the best job possible”.
There are plenty of good pressure washers out there, but the WEN PW31 is what we would call a “great” pressure washer. Instead of following the convention and releasing a sub-3000 psi machine for the consumer market, WEN decided to take the extra step and give us a 3100-psi beast whose cleaning power is comparable to that of a commercial pressure washer. It is powered by an OEM branded 208 cc 4-stroke gas engine, and is equipped with a General industries axial cam pump for optimal flow rates and pressure consistency.
A flow rate between 1.2 to 1.75 GPM is often considered enough for cleaning your car or sweeping the dirt and grime off your driveway. However, if you are like us, then you certainly don’t mind a little extra power in your pressure washer. After all, it is priced only slightly higher than an average 2500-2700 psi gas powered pressure washer from any other big-name brand.
A higher flow rate means you can cover more area in less time with the same amount of pressure. But when you combine very high pressure (even by pressure washer standards) with an amazing flow rate, you get a machine that will effortlessly power through any task you throw at it. You get a little extra time out of the day to spend on work and family, while the job is done much more cleanly and efficiently.
What is even more interesting than raw performance however, is the build quality and reliability of the WEN PW31 pressure washer. At the heart of this machine lies a General Industries axial camp pump, this particular pump unit was designed to deliver commercial grade performance in a consumer package. It is both compact and lightweight, which helps in keeping the overall weight of the PW31 down to just 67 pounds (dry weight). Powering this pump, is a OEM branded 208 cc 4-stroke gasoline motor.
This is an OHV engine, which automatically makes it quieter and more efficient than most conventional budget gasoline-powered pressure washers. The OHV design also increases engine life expectancy and reduces emissions. A selector dial lets you choose which detergent tank you want the pump to draw from. The Sun Joe SPX3001 is basically a slightly modified SPX3000. It utilizes the exact same 14.5-amp, 1800w electric motor as the SPX3000, and even uses the exact same pump design. The major difference between this model and the SPX3000 is the fact that instead of two onboard 0.9L detergent tanks, the SPX3001 is equipped with a single onboard 1.2L detergent tank. This means that total detergent storage is about 33% less, however you can now carry more detergent of one kind.
The built-in hose reel is a nice touch…and practical
You can make the argument that the same can be done with the SPX3000 if you just fill both the onboard tanks with the same type of detergent, but you would then have to wash the tanks each time you want to change the detergent type. Besides, one 1.2L tank occupies less space on body than two 0.9L tanks, meaning that you are getting a slightly more compact machine. This makes the SPX3001 easier to move around and store.
One of the more exciting changes that home users will find very useful is the hose reel. It is exactly what it sounds like, a reel storage system for the hose, kind of like a fishing line reel. This reel allows you to conveniently roll up the hose and keep it attached to the pressure washer without consuming any extra space.
Despite being a pound heavier than its predecessor, the SPX3001 is still very light at just 32 pounds. It is equipped with all the technologies from the SPX3000 such as the TSS (Total Stop System) that instantly shuts down the pump when the trigger is not engaged, resulting in a longer pump life and more efficiency. All things considered, the SPX3001 took everything that was good about the SPX3000 and improved upon it. The hose reel system allows you to turn the hose and it will roll right up. If it were the SPX3000, you would have to hand-wrap the hose around the attachment storage on the handle.
If you don’t need the dual detergent storage and want a more convenient hose storage system, go for the SPX3001. If you want to save a very small sum of money, don’t care about hand-wrapping the hose every time you use your pressure washer, and need to carry two types of detergent at the same time then the SPX3000 is the better choice.

For beginners, the SPX4001 features a pressure selector switch that lets you control the speed at which the motor runs. By decreasing the speed of the motor, you can drop the pressure output down to 1450psi, aka “LOW” mode. In “HIGH” the pressure is at rated maximum output, i.e. 2030 psi. Despite its tiny size and plastic body, the GPW1702 is an exceptionally well made and highly effective pressure washer for home usage. It packs 1700 psi of pressure, along with a maximum rated flow rate of 1.2 GPM. The flow rate seems to be a bit on the low side, which is why we recommend that you don’t use the GPW1702 to clean large driveways or pavement sections. It will take more time since there is less water flowing out of the wand per minute, even though the pressure is quite good for light cleaning work.
You can clean the fence around your home with this pressure washer, or use it to clean up the greasy garage floor. There is a chemical/ detergent injection port in the pump, but no detergent tanks. This means that you will have to manually connect the pump with a detergent source and that will add some preparation time to your cleaning schedule. There are two nozzle tips included along with the GPW1702, one of which is a 25° tip, the other one is a 40° tip. You should use the tighter angle to clean fences and muddy driveways or pavement.
You can use the larger angle tip to clean windows and spray your car. You can use the 25° tip for spraying your car as well, and you can use it for cleaning the garage floor as well. The pressure hose is coiled up on a reel that is hand operated via a handle to the side of the frame. The carry handle is right on top of the hose reel and is coated with a soft rubber grip layer. The power cord for this electric pressure washer is 35 feet long, and comes with a GFCI plug. Wheels are attached to the base so that you can conveniently roll this washer around. It is quite light at just 26 pounds, and uses an axial cam pump.
While this pressure washer is not as versatile as the Sun Joe SPX3000 or SPX4001, it sure does get the job done. If you don’t mind losing the detergent tank and giving up on an extendable wand, then the GreenWorks GPW1702 makes for an amazing low budget alternative to the Sun Joe SPX3001.
One of the things we noticed about the GPW1702 is that it features a much sturdier hose reel compared to the more expensive Sun Joe SPX3001, and the pump unit seems to be as good, if not better. It does use a weaker 1500w motor, and has a lesser flow rate (1.2 GPM vs 1.76 GPM). The Sun Joe is better for cleaning larger areas because of its higher flow rate.

The GreenWorks GPW1501 is a direct competitor to the Sun Joe SPX1000. Both models generate about the same pressure- the GPW1501 at 1500psi, and the SPX1000 at 1450psi. However, the GreenWorks GPW1501 is about 9-10% costlier than the Sun Joe SPX1000 even though the difference in pressure output is only 3.4%. So why is that?
Well, to begin things, the GreenWorks pressure washer packs a more powerful motor. Instead of using an 11.5amp / 1400w universal motor like in the SPX1000, the GreenWorks GPW1501 features a 13amp / 1500w universal motor. What is surprising however, is the fact that the Sun Joe SPX1000 still boasts a higher maximum flow rate despite featuring a slightly weaker motor. The GPW1501 has a maximum rated flow rate of 1.2 GPM while the Sun Joe SPX1000 has a max rate flow rate of 1.45 GPM.
Now, you don’t need a whole lot of flow rate to clean a barbeque grill or wash the car. And to speak the truth- that is what most of the customers who purchase either of these models are going to do with them. Even if you have a large driveway or patio to clean, don’t worry because either of these two models will do the job just fine. They will just do it slightly slower than a model with 2+ GPM of flow rate and 2500+ psi of pressure.
Most premium gas pressure washers cost nearly twice as much and are not very economical to operate or maintain. You need to mix and change oils, clean the carburetor, change spark plugs occasionally, pull a giant cord to start the engine, etc. With a tiny electric pressure washer, you can lift it up in your hands, walk outside and plug the thing into an electrical outlet, turn on the switch and start cleaning. Simple as that – no noisy gas engines, no pesky maintenance tasks, and no harmful emissions.
The GPW1501 also comes with a soap applicator attachment, and a couple of QC nozzle tips- 25° and 40°. It lacks wheels, so you must carry the thing around- this means that it is harder to move and store compared to the Sun Joe SPX1000. Also, it weighs about 5 pounds more than the SPX1000. With the GPW1602 1600 psi electric pressure washer, GreenWorks continues its tradition of not attaching wheels to smaller electric models so that all their customers will benefit from a nice little workout every time they decide to lift the pressure washer outside for cleaning something. Jokes aside, the GPW1602 is an incredibly well-built pressure washer.
The 20’ non-marring hose is heavier and feels much sturdier than ordinary rubber hoses (looking at you Sun Joe). Yes, there is also a detergent siphoning inlet on the base of the pressure washer, along with a soap applicator attachment that you get for free. But you also get fewer nozzles in return, only 2 instead of the standard 4-5 nozzles that every other company provides. But when we think about it, that is not a deal breaker since the two nozzles that DO come with this pressure washer happen to the two most used nozzle tips – the 25° spray tip and the 40° soaping/ washing tip.
With the 25° tip, you can clean mud off your 4x4s and bikes, and you can also wash the fence clean of deposited dirt and grime. With the “softer” 40° tip you can clean windows, outdoor furniture, wooden decks, garage floors, etc. Unfortunately, there is no hose reel to keep the hose tucked in nice and tidy, so you will have to remove the hose and wind it up by hand every time you are done cleaning.
We don’t blame GreenWorks for this as the GPW1602 is such a small pressure washer, that adding a hose reel beneath the carry handle would only increase the overall size and weight of the whole thing. We don’t want that, do we? Especially since there are no wheels, and once they add in a hose reel they would have to add in a couple of 5” wheels as well. And before you know it, the costs go up by a significant margin. The 35-foot power cord comes with a GFCI plug, and the pressure washer can be used in both horizontal as well as vertical position.

The AR390SS is an incredibly well built 2000 psi electric pressure washer. It boasts a maximum flow rate of 1.4 GPM and is powered by a 14amp / 1.6 HP universal motor. It is a direct competitor to the Sun Joe SPX3001 and SPX4001. We really like this pressure washer over the SPX3001 because despite being priced very close to each other, the AR390SS is built to be much more reliable and sturdy.
The Sun Joe electric pressure washers have a flow rate advantage at 1.76 GPM vs 1.4 GPM, but they lack the sturdy metal hose reel system that feels stable and smooth unlike the somewhat flimsy hose reel system on the SPX3001 and SPX4001. How Does a Pressure Washer Work?

Some pressure washers don’t just pump out water, but they also contain canisters or reservoirs that hold soap or detergent which is mixed with the incoming water supply, and then shot at high pressure through the output nozzle to create a powerful jet of soapy water. Other than the core components themselves such as the inlet and outlet valves, motor, pump, compression chamber, etc. you will also find a waterproof seal around the motor in every pressure washer.
The seal is made from plastic in the case of electric pressure washers, while gas powered pressure washers utilize a composite shield made from a mix of metal and rubber because gas engines generate a lot of heat and will melt through ordinary plastic shields. The Motor: The motor is the muscle of a pressure washer. If you want more pressure or higher output velocity, you install a more powerful motor. They can be one of two types – gas and electric. A gas-powered pressure washer typically contains a single cylinder air cooled motor which is started via cord pull, just like the ones on lawn mowers and chainsaws. OHV (overhead valve) 4-stroke motors are the most efficient and produce less noise, they also contain steel jackets around the piston to reduce wear and tear and improve lifetime. Twin stroke motors contain side valves, are more prone to damage over time, but are much cheaper, lighter, and easier to operate as well as a maintain.
The Pump:
This is the heart of any pressure washer – the pump pulls in water from the inlet valve, pressurizes it, and drives this pressurized water up through the high-pressure hose and into the spray gun. Pressure washer pumps function differently from conventional pumps such as for example, a sump pump. Pressure washer pumps are required to generate a high-pressure output with low flow rate, whereas sump pumps generate high flow with low pressure. A pressure washer consumes less water per cleaning cycle as opposed to a regular water hose, because it outputs water at extremely high pressure instead of high volume.

Positive Displacement Pumps can be designed to be one of two types:
Reciprocating: These use pistons, plungers, or diaphragms to create a reciprocating (push/ pull) motion that pumps water through a network.
Rotary: These use screws, gears, vanes, etc. to propel water through the circulation network.
All pressure washer pump designs are based on reciprocating pumps, and use pistons or plungers to drive the water.
Wobble Plate pumps use a wobbling plate (wobble plate) that is connected to the drive shaft of the motor (gas or electric), this wobble plate has two spring loaded piston/ plunger units connected to opposite ends of its face, so that when the plate wobbles around the drive shaft, one piston is moving forward while the other one is moving backwards. This means, one piston is sucking water in while the other one is pushing water out.
Wobble plate pumps are used in pressure washers with a pressure rating below 2500 psi, and a flow rate less than 2 GPM (Gallons per Minute). The pros of this type of pump is that it does not employ any piston seals, is self-priming, and can run dry without damaging itself, while the pressure output is very good for home usage. There are also a few negatives to this design – multiple moving parts add to overall complexity and make repair work difficult, while also decreasing average lifetime. The flow rate is limited, and efficiency is not as good as other pump types.
Axial Cam pumps or “Swash Plate” pumps offer greater pressure and flow rates as compared to wobble plate pumps, thanks to their similar but improved design over the wobble plate type. In this pump, you will find a “swash plate” instead of a wobble plate – the swash plate rotates in a tilted fashion at a certain angle to the drive shaft in the center.
This swash plate is attached to hydraulic pistons that expand and contract as the angled wheel rotates, in fact this mechanism is like a hydraulic transmission system. It is incredibly smooth and efficient; the flow rate can be controlled by varying the angle of the swash plate. The average lifespan of one of these pumps is about 500-800 hours. Assuming you use your pressure washer for approximately 3 hours a week, that should give you about 6 years on your purchase.
These pumps are light and compact, as well as self-priming. They have more lifespan than a wobble plate pump, and are more efficient since you can vary the flow rate. When you go out there looking for a pressure washer, make sure that the pump which is installed in your pressure washer is from one of these brands. Or at least some brand that is well known for making reliable products, since the pump is the heart of your pressure washer and once it breaks down, you might have to pay a very hefty cost for repairing the unit as a pump leak or malfunction has the potential to damage other sections of the pressure washer including the motor.
A High-Pressure Hose:
When you have a device capable of pumping out water at pressures upwards of 2000 psi, you better have a hose that can handle such pressure. Just to be clear, 2000 psi is more than 133 times atmospheric pressure at sea level. And that is why the hoses which are used in pressure washers come with a pressure rating of at least 5000 or 6000 psi.
That is because the officially mandated safety margin on pressure washer hoses is 300%. So, if your pressure washer comes with a pressure rating of 200 psi, its hose must be capable of handling at least 6000 psi. Typically, most pressure washer hoses are constructed from two or more layers of high density plastic, reinforced with wire mesh.
A Trigger Operated Spray Gun:
It is the attachment found at the end of the high-pressure hose, and contains a trigger mechanism that you squeeze to regulate the flow of water through a valve. The trigger gun also comes with a wand and nozzle, you can switch out the wand or spray tip/ nozzle in most modern pressure washers. For example, you can use a spinning wand spray tip or a rotating brush. Powered attachments are driven by the force of the water flowing through them.
Pressure Washing vs Power Washing
Many people who are not familiar with pressure washing or power washing might initially assume both to be the same thing. Heat: The heat causes a high speed molecular action in water that reduces its surface tension and makes the water a more potent cleaning agent than when it is in the normal (unheated state). Heated water can effectively penetrate grime at the molecular level, this results in faster and more efficient cleaning.
Agitation: Agitation is built up by the impact force of high pressure water colliding against the surface at a high flow rate. This is like the scrubbing or brushing action that is generated when you clean your dinner plate with a scrubber or sponge. Water colliding against a solid surface at high velocity and pressure can generate a lot of impact force. If you have ever heard of water jets being used to cut through metal plates and blocks in industrial applications, you know what we mean.
Soap: Soap serves as the chemical agent that breaks the bond between a surface and the dirt/grime stuck on top of it. Pressure or power washers use specially designed detergents that are different from the soap you use to clean utensils or clothes. Detergents use surfactants (surface active reagents) to emulsify the oil and grease molecules which are bound to the surface.
Emulsification is the process in which two otherwise immiscible liquids begin to mix, forming an “emulsion”, such as oil + water. The soap is the agent that causes this mixing, all the dirt particles also cling to the oil and are washed away by the water jet from the power washer. Not all power washers accept detergent, some just pump out hot water. Some power washers are capable of heating water within their own bodies via a built-in heating unit, while other power washers require a hot water input.

Pressure washing depends entirely on the force of the water, instead of the temperature. Most pressure washers accept a stream of regular water (room temperature), and force it out at high pressure and velocity. The impact force generated by the water jet is what dislodges grime and dirt from a dirty surface. Of course, not all pressure washers are cold-water types: some also accept hot water inputs, while there are a few that have their own internal heating systems to heat up water. Never try to use a pressure washer that is NOT a hot water pressure washer with hot water, since you will damage the machinery within and void its warranty.
Basically, if you need to clean away oil, grime, mold, etc. then the hot water pressure washer or a power washer is best for those kinds of tasks (since cold-water will only push the grime and oil around instead of cleaning it). If you want to strip away paint, remove sand or caked mud from a vehicle body, or clean your patios, driveways, outdoors furniture, etc. then a standard cold-water pressure washer will do the job just fine. Grease and oil require you to use a hot water pressure washer or power washer, preferably one that accepts detergents.
7 Types of Pressure Washer Nozzles
Choosing the right nozzle (aka spray tip) for your pressure washer is extremely important, since you could potentially damage whatever it is that you are trying to clean if you use the wrong nozzle. By choosing the incorrect nozzle you could peel the paint off your car, crack or scratch your wooden deck, and even break through the mortar on your brick driveway, resulting in expensive repairs.
The nozzle plays an important part in generating the “pressure”, think of it this way – if you are operating a garden hose and want to reach a plant that is beyond the spraying range of the hose, what do you do? You take your thumb and place it on the opening of hose to block of about half or 3/4ths of the opening. This means that all the water is forced to exit through the smaller orifice, and it does so with increased pressure and velocity.
You can also change the direction of the water exiting from the blocked hole by angling your thumb in different directions. The more velocity at which the water exits the hose, the more distance it will travel.

The 0° nozzle shoots a direct stream of water at a zero-degree angle from the axis of the nozzle, this nozzle shoots a perfectly streamlined and direct jet of water with no fanning or spraying. It generates the most velocity and hits the hardest.
It is usually colored in red, and has the smallest area of coverage (about the area of a quarter coin). Used to remove extremely tough caked mud, or for removing rust from metallic surfaces. Not suitable for general cleaning purposes due to the small coverage and extremely high velocity of water which could damage most objects.
The 15° nozzle, colored in yellow is used to prepare a surface for painting. The spread of the water from the nozzle is approximately 15°, so the spray fans out a little bit as it exits the nozzle, but the spread is still relatively small. You can also use this nozzle to remove mud and dirt from 4x4s.
The 25° or green tip nozzle is used for general cleaning (driveways, patios, cars, furniture, fences, etc.). It provides a reasonable amount of coverage with sufficient velocity and pressure to clean away most stains. The greater area of coverage as opposed to a 0 or 15-degree nozzle lets you clean a larger area faster, while the moderate water velocity and pressure ensures that you clean the surface instead of damaging it.
The 40° white tip nozzle provides the gentlest spray with a large area of coverage- perfect for spraying windows.
The 65° nozzle or black tip nozzle provides the largest area of coverage and is suited for soaping. The larger orifice causes reduced velocity, thereby increasing pressure in the hose. This increased pressure assists in pulling detergent into the line.
The turbo or rotary nozzle combines the sheer force of a zero-degree nozzle with the spray area of a 25-degree nozzle. It also adds in a rotating head that can spin the nozzle at 1800-3000 rpm, meaning that the water hits the surface in the form of a round cone.
The adjustable or variable nozzle is the final type of nozzle, it has 5 nozzles combined into one. You can switch between nozzle angles in real time base on your needs.
Choosing the Perfect Pressure Washer
Choosing the correct pressure washer for your needs will require you to take multiple factors into consideration, such as:
Cleaning Power (PSI and GPM) – Cleaning power is determined by the amount of pressure that the washer can generate, as well as the volume of water that it can put out in a certain amount of time (flow rate). Pressure is measured in psi (pounds per square inch) and flow rate is measured in GPM (gallons per minute).
To determine and compare the cleaning power of multiple pressure washers, we suggest that you make a chart listing the psi and GPM ratings of all the pressure washers which fall into your budget, or all the pressure washers that seem interesting to you. Then, list the PSI and GPM values for each of the pressure washers, multiply the PSI and GPM values for each pressure washer.
The result of the multiplication should give you the cleaning power for each pressure washer model. PSI determines how powerful the water stream will be, and this power decides what kind of stuff you can do with the pressure washer (clean patios and decks, strip paint, spray fences, clean caked mud off equipment or vehicles, etc.). The flow rate determines how fast you can clean, since more gallons of water per minute equals more debris washed away.
Here are some rough estimates of what you can accomplish with certain psi and GPM ranges:
Low: 1,300 to 1,800 psi and up to 1.5 GPM
The pressure washers in this range will typically be consumer electric portable models that are relatively affordable and easy to carry around as well as easy to operate and maintain. The cleaning power, although on the lower end of the spectrum, is still more than enough for most daily use cases in an average household. You can use these for car washing, window and shutter cleaning, barbeque grill spot cleaning, outdoor furniture cleaning, and even light mildew/ mold removal.

Onboard detergent tanks are a bonus and are well worth the slight cost increase for the great boost in cleaning power that you will get from the combination of detergent with high pressure water. Make sure that a wand, 2-3 nozzles (minimum), and a power cord are included alongside your compact electric pressure washer so you don’t have to go out and shop separately for all that stuff.
You don’t need the toughest and best attachments in this range, since the flow rate and pressure values are on the lower end, so any decent nozzle + spray gun and wand combo will do. But make sure the high-pressure hose is rated for at least 3 times the pressure rating of the washer, never compromise on hose quality. A typical light duty pressure washer in the 1300-1800 psi range can clean 10 to 40 square feet of floor space within 10 minutes (just an estimate, can vary based on usage conditions, specific models, etc.).
Medium: 2,000-3,000 PSI and up to 2.8 GPM :
Whereas a light duty pressure washer typically employs an electric motor, the medium range commercial units come equipped with gasoline engines that can either be 2-stroke or 4-stroke (more efficient and silent, but also costlier). Look for pressure washers with a reliable engine from a reputable manufacturer, and look for the PWMA logo (this indicates that a pressure washer is approved by the Pressure Washer Manufacturers’ Association).
These pressure washers are mostly used for tasks such as : siding and pavement cleaning, tough stain removal, paint stripping, mold and mildew removal, heavy equipment cleaning, etc. You can still use them to clean your vehicles and driveways as well as fence/ furniture cleaning and window washing, but if that is all you want to do then it would be more economical to get a light duty electrical pressure washer because of the lower initial cost as well as lower operating costs (gas vs electric, electric is cheaper to run).

The vibration and heat output is increased, so it is not recommended to run such models for more than 20 hours a week.
For home use, this is no big deal since the average household will not be using a pressure washer for more than 3-4 hours a week anyways. You clean your car for 10-15 minutes, clean the driveway for another 15 minutes, do the windows and sidings for 20 minutes, patios and deck for 10-15 minutes – that is still less than 1.5 hours. Of course, it all depends on the size of your property and the number of your vehicles, as well as how dirty things are. But still, 3 or 4 hours per week is the most that an average homeowner will be using his or her pressure washer.
Premium overhead valve or overhead cam engines are the best if you are looking to purchase gas operated pressure washers, and look for axial cam (swash plate) pumps with aluminum or brass heads. Poly-braided or steel-braided high-pressure hoses are preferable, along with a pro-style steel spray wand and quick connect coupling.
High: 3,000-4,000+ PSI and up to 4.0 GPM :
High end models are almost always geared towards professional duty, come with heavy-duty triplex pumps and commercial-series engines. They are big and use heavy gauge welded steel frames, along with solid steel axles for the wheels. The pressure hose is steel braided, and the unit is equipped with heavy duty pneumatic tires on steel hubs for reliable short distance transportation by towing.
These pressure washers generate more than 3000 psi of pressure and are used to clean aircraft fleets, industrial chimneys and factory floors, army vehicles, etc. They are also employed for paint stripping and graffiti removal, as well as construction site jobs and surface preparation. Most of you reading this article don’t need (and can’t afford) an industrial grade pressure washer, and if you do then you probably already know what you are looking for and this article is not for you.
Hot or Cold Water
Hot water pressure washers or power washers are for those people who want to clean greasy surfaces such as the engine and transmission of vehicles, or for people who own power machinery. If you want to clean mold and mildew or remove tough stains from your sidewalk then a hot water pressure washer is best for the job since it kills mold and mildew with high pressure and hot temperature, resulting in a faster and more effective cleaning experience as opposed to cold-water pressure washers.
Cleaning grease is easier with hot water since it will wash the oil away along with all the gunk, whereas a cold-water jet will simply push the oil around the surface instead of cleaning it.
Attachments and Features
Look for pressure washers that come with attachments such as multiple spray tips/ nozzles, a good steel spray wand, telescoping handles for transporting the unit, quick-connect capabilities for fast and easy accessory switching. If your pressure washer has an accessory storage space, it allows you to store extension cords, extra nozzles and wands, as well as tubing and hoses. This way you won’t have to run around searching for all your spare parts and attachments, everything is carried along with the pressure washer itself.
Electric or Gas?
Pros of electric:
- Smaller, lighter, more portable. Cheaper as well.
- More suited to home use because of low running costs and ease of operation. Just plug it into a power outlet and turn the switch on. No need to mix oils, prime the engine, pull cords, or clean the carburetor and air filter.
- Much quieter than their gas operated counterparts.
Pros of gas:
- More powerful, better if you wish to work without being limited by the presence of a nearby electrical outlet. Even though the pressure washer itself is slightly heavier, it is better suited for cleaning large areas since you can take it wherever you want as long as there is fuel in the tank.
- Higher PSI and GPM ratings let you clean larger areas faster, and you can do stuff that you can’t with an electric pressure washer. For instance, gas operated pressure washers can strip paint, blast away hardened or caked mud from 4x4s, clean pavements and driveways more effectively, and they also have a longer water spray range so you can wash the second story windows on your house, the sidings, etc. Clearing mold spores and pollen is also much easier with a gas pressure washer.
- Even though they require more maintenance, gas pressure washers have a longer lifespan and can be used more frequently.
Ease of Usage and Portability
Sometimes, performance isn’t the only deciding factor when it comes to choosing the right pressure washer. If you are buying a personal pressure washer for home usage that you will operate yourself, it better be a machine that is easy to operate and convenient to store or transport. Some pressure washers come with multiple attachments pre-included inside the box, and even the default spray wands and hoses provided by the manufacturer are of a high quality which ensures that you will not have to go out looking for spare parts or accessories anytime soon.
This ensures a wonderful experience right out of the box, and to add on top of that, good models come with features such as accessory storage (allows you to store spare wands, cords, nozzles, etc. right inside the washer itself), and telescoping handles for easy transportation. Good electric models will also include a cable tidy system, such as a single hook or two-hook winder, or even a built-in cable reel.
