The Black and Decker Hedge Hog (HH2455) will enable you to trim your hedges and shrubs with relative ease and comfort. At 24″ long this trimmer provides an excellent balance between cutting distance, power and ergonomics, but the best feature of this Black and Decker Hedge Hog is the 180 degree rotating rear handle which allows you work comfortably from any angle — and with more control than fixed-handle hedge trimmers.
This Black and Decker Hedge Hog electric trimmer is Powered by a robust 3.3 Amp in-line engine. It’s very lightweight at only 6.5 lbs allowing you to work for long periods of time without straining your back. Black and Decker designed the HH2455 to cut through shrubs and branches up to 3/4” in diameter. If you need a more powerful hedge trimmer than you should seriously consider a gas model such as the Poulan Pro PP2822 (28cc).
This Black and Decker Hedge Hog has a rust-resistant dual-action steel blade that’s far superior to single action blade designs. It will cut through overgrowth and branches with 40% less vibration as a result of this design feature. That’s a significant overall improvement that you need to factor in when choosing a hedge trimmer.
We live in an age where you can buy a power tool for any task or job you want to accomplish so if you’re still using manual hedge shears then you might want to seriously consider upgrading to make your life easier — and more importantly, save yourself a lot of time.

It has a locking on/off switch that prevents accidental starting making it safe for transporting and storage, and when you’re working in the yard the same locking mechanism will stop you from accidentally shutting it off.
If you don’t like the idea of wrestling with an extension cord when you work then you’ll probably love the Black and Decker 40V trimmer which I’ll briefly cover at the end of this article. It’s always nice to have options. I know that a large percentage of the population aren’t too excited about having to manage an extension cord so if that happens to be you then the Black & Decker 40V trimmer (LHT2436) is a great option. Yes, it’s more expensive but you can attribute that to the cost of the battery.
If you intend to purchase the corded 24″ HH2455 trimmer don’t forget to buy the right extension cord — in this case, you’ll need a 16-gauge cord so if you don’t have one already then you won’t be doing much work without one. I’m sure you can easily find one at your local hardware store as well. Just make sure it’s 16-gauge like the cord below.
The Black and Decker Hedge Hog comes with a two year warranty.

Black & Decker 40V trimmer (LHT2436)
The Black & Decker 40V LHT2436 has one major advantage over the Black and Decker Hedge Hog and that’s the powerful lithium-ion battery that drives it. What this means to you is that you have complete freedom of movement when you work in your yard. You pay extra for the convenience of being cord-free but in my opinion it’s worth it if you have the budget to justify it.
It can cut overgrowth and branches up .75″ in diameter and it’s quite lightweight at 6.9 lbs. Black and Decker found the right balance on this 40V trimmer because it feels “just right” in your hands making it easy to control and maneuver when cutting.

The 40V and 36V Black & Decker tools are able to share batteries as well, as stated on their website.
These are the swappable battery compatible models:

If you want to work in your yard for long hours without having to worry about running out of battery power then I recommend getting an extra battery. If you’re a frequent reader of Chainsaw Journal you’ll know that I love battery operated tools but getting an extra battery is a must if you have big projects to tackle.
If you only intend to work on small light-duty cutting projects around your yard then save your money, one battery will suffice.
