Grace & Beauty | Dolphin Oasis Z5 Pool Cleaner
The Dolphin Oasis Z5 is simply a tool that cleans swimming pools — nothing more, nothing less. By doing the tedious work of cleaning our grubby, slime-ridden pool, it will free your time and enable you to spend your time doing more meaningful things. It doesn’t complain, never gets tired and can work all day without a bathroom break. Thankfully, the robots have landed.
Personally, I don’t enjoy doing dirty labor-intensive work. I’m not lazy, it’s just not how I want to spend my time. It’s not just me though because robotic pool cleaners are actually quite popular nowadays, and their sales continue to increase at a rapid rate.
The focus of this article is the Dolphin Oasis Z5 but we cover so much more than just this pool cleaner. Keep reading and learn why investing in a quality robotic pool cleaner is, well, actually — it’s an investment into your quality of life.
Robot Pool Cleaners are here to Stay
The Dolphin Oasis Z5 is part of the new and modern generation of Maytronics Dolphin Series robotic pool cleaners. It’s not a cheap product by any means, but the cost is also an indicator of the quality of cleaner you get. Sure, you can buy a cheap robotic pool cleaner but what’s the point if it doesn’t effectively do what it’s supposed to do — like clean your pool thoroughly.
We walk you through the factors you need to consider when shopping for a pool cleaner.
— here are some basic details on the Oasis Z5 just to whet your appetite. Read more details later in the article. As I said, we have a lot of ground to cover.
Quick Overview | Dolphin Oasis Z5
Maytronics Dolphin robots are categorized into three classes: basic, classic and top-of-the-line. View or download the MANUAL for the Oasis Z5.
- Note: For some reason Maytronics refers to this pool cleaner as the Explorer Plus in the manual. I don’t know why their manual is labeled that way but it is. I just wanted to clarify this so you don’t get confused when you view the manual.
More info on the Dolphin Oasis Z5 later in the article. A robotic pool cleaner is expensive so it’s imperative that you consider all of your requirements to ensure that your money is well spent.
We’re here to help you make the right choice, not to coerce you to buy something you don’t need. This has been our philosophy from day one — “We do the research so you don’t have to.”
Benefits of Owning A Robotic Pool Cleaner
How many hours do you plan on relaxing by the pool this year? I bet you can imagine yourself chilling in the garden right now as the sun beats down on your face, but if this was real life you would have one big problem to deal with. If you want to jump into a beautiful clean pool when your skin starts getting a little too warm, you’ll need to ensure it’s clean enough at all times. In order for that to become a reality, you’ll need to find yourself a suitable pool cleaner first.
Video | How the Dolphin Pool Cleaner Operates
The main question everyone always asks themselves is whether or not they can get away with buying a cheap pool cleaner, which makes sense because we’re all trying to save money. There is nothing wrong with cheap pool cleaners and they’ll do their job, but unfortunately the price means you’ll need to make some sacrifices. I don’t want you to think cheap pool cleaners won’t work, because they wouldn’t be on the market if they were completely ineffective, but let’s look at why it makes more sense to splash out on a nice one.
Which Type of Pool Cleaner is Right for You?
Just to provide a little context, there are 3 main types of pool cleaners, often referred to as Automatic Pool Cleaners:
Robotic Pool Cleaner: These pool cleaners are completely independent from your pool’s filter and pump system. They are powered from independently as well, usually they have a transformer of their own. Essentially, these are plug-and-play cleaners that don’t require any set-up or technical know-how. Robotic pool cleaners are more powerful, more efficient, easy-to-use and operate and ultimately they are the best way to clean your pool, meaning the end result is cleaner water than the other types of pool cleaners.
And yes, they are more expensive! Ultimately you have to determine what makes sense for you.
Primal X3 | Robotic Pool Cleaner
Pressure-Side Pool Cleaner: This cleaner type typically (but not always) requires an additional ‘booster pump.’ It takes advantage of the ‘venturi effect‘ to do the cleaning. It also uses the most amount of electricity of all the types of cleaners.
Suction-Side Cleaner: The lease expensive type of automatic pool cleaner and also popular because it’s affordable. It attaches via the skimmer port and the water being pumped is the force that moves the cleaner. Suction is created on the underside of the cleaner and as it moves it vacuums dirt and debris through the hose returning it back to the pump strainer basket and filter. It attaches to one of the suction ports of your pool.
Zodiac MX8 | Suction Side Cleaner
NOTE: Suction-side and pressure-side cleaners are completely dependent on your swimming pool’s main pump and filtering system to remove dirt and debris from the water. Because of this, there are limitations and they cannot remove particles any smaller than the pore size of your pool’s system existing filter element.
Basically, you get what you pay for. You’ll never get the same level as clean as you will if you buy a quality robotic pool cleaner such as the Dolphin Oasis Z5. At the end of this article we show you some other options as well like the Maytronics Dolphin Premier, but, generally speaking, robotic pool cleaners are far superior to other pool cleaners.

The Main Disadvantages Of Cheap Pool Cleaners
They’re Not Very Cost Effective
The number one reason you’re considering a cheap pool cleaner is so you can save money, but this will come back to bite you over the long term. We’re going to look at the Dolphin Oasis Z5 later on, and it costs less than 15 cents every time you want to clean your pool. Even if we completely ignore the fact cheap pool cleaners likely to break down a lot more often, a suction cleaner will still use your pool filtration system meaning even if the pool cleaner doesn’t break it will quickly degrade the lifespan of other swimming pool parts. In other words, spending less in the short term will cost you more in the long term.
Ignoring Some Areas Of Your Pool
When you buy a pool cleaner, it’s because you want it to clean your pool. I know that sounds completely obvious, but you might be surprised to know cheap cleaners accidentally miss out sections of your pool. Why in the world would you buy anything if it can’t do its job properly? If we forget about the specific types of cleaners for a moment, the cheap ones won’t be able to do things expensive ones won’t shy away from. Climbing up pool walls and steps, squeezing into tight corners, and getting rid of debris that is too large or too small is something inexpensive models will never be able to compete with.
They Waste A Lot More Of Your Time
We’ll ignore manual pool cleaners, because if you use one of those I’m sure you’ll already know you’ll spend just as much time cleaning as you will swimming. Suction and pressure cleaners take longer to set up because they need to be connected to various parts of your swimming pool, but if you have a robotic cleaner you can plonk it in the water and it will go around cleaning everything for you while you’re inside cooking your lunch. The Dolphin Oasis Z5 can deal with your entire pool in around two and a half hours.
The Need For A Separate Hose Connection
This only relates to a pressure cleaner, but they’re still cheaper than a robotic model. Even though they’re powerful, they do require the help of an extra booster pump which must be fitted to a separate hose connection in your swimming pool. It’s nice if you already have one handy, but to fit one retrospectively is going to wipe out the money you’d save by opting for a pressure cleaner instead of a robotic one. Cheap pool cleaners aren’t designed to be plugged in and dropped straight into the water to work their magic.
Robotic pool cleaners are more expensive suction side pool cleaners and pressure side pool cleaners but they are far superior to either. How? Well, thy pick up more dirt and debris, have more suction, can climb walls far more effectively, scrubs the surface and also cleans the water line. Robotic pool cleaners do it all, and they’re more energy efficient.
Polaris 280 | Example of a pressure-side pool cleaner
A Lack Of Beneficial Extras
Cheap pool cleaners are usually only designed to do their job, but if you spend a little extra you usually get a couple of beneficial extras to help make your life easier. On such example we’ll look at later on is the caddy you’ll get with a Dolphin Oasis Z5, because pulling your cleaner out and putting it away again isn’t easy. If you have a tool to help you take it to the water and whisk it back to its storage space, it will mean less exhausting work for you. Even though the ‘extra’ might be something so basic it should come with all pool cleaners, they definitely don’t.
Having To Manhandle Your Pool Cleaner
There is no denying pool cleaners are always going to get stuck at some point, but some will end up getting stuck a lot more often than others. The Oasis Z5 comes with a swivel cable to prevent this from happening, but cheaper models aren’t going to have the same technology. Some will also come to a standstill because they can’t handle the size of the debris they’re catching, but more expensive models will be able to handle a lot more. I don’t want to say they can handle anything, because a giant rock is a giant rock.
It Won’t Cover The Entire Length Of Your Pool
If you don’t spend a lot of money on a pool cleaner, you can expect them to cut costs wherever possible. Can you imagine having a pool cleaner incapable of starting at one side of the pool and reaching the other because the hose is too short? At least when you spend a little extra money you know a cleaner is going to be able to stretch far enough to clean your entire pool, which will prevent you from having to find a new power socket or scrub some of the walls by yourself manually.
Is A Quality Robotic Pool Cleaner Worth The Extra Cost?
Before we answer this question, I think it’s important to get a couple of things straight. We’re not comparing a robotic pool cleaner to a leaf rake and a sponge, which you might be able to get away with if your pool is tiny and you have plenty of free time on your hands.
We’re going to presume your pool is a respectable size, and we are comparing the robotic models to suction and pressure cleaners. Remember there isn’t an extremely gigantic difference in price, so the robotic vacuum cleaners are worth it if:
- You’re more interested in overall value than the upfront cost.
- You want your pool cleaner to save you as much time as possible.
- You want the least amount of maintenance possible once you’ve bought your cleaner.
- Your pool should be as clean as possible after your cleaner has finished its cycle.
- You don’t want to risk damaging your swimming pool pump and filtration system.
- You want a cleaner with the ability to cover every inch of your pool.
Dolphin Oasis Z5 | Advanced Robotic Pool Cleaner
Model No: 99991079-OAS
Maytronics is the company behind the Dolphin, and they’ve been going strong ever since they were founded back in 1983. Ever since then, they’ve been recognized as one of the companies that have pushed state-of-the-art swimming pool technology to the next level year after year. Now the Dolphin robotic pool cleaners are acknowledged as one of the best in the world, and once again they’ve set the bar even higher with the invention of the Dolphin Oasis Z5. We’re going to take a look behind the scenes at what this awesome technology will mean for you if you purchase their top-of-the-range robotic vacuum cleaner.
View the online Manual. Don’t be confused when viewing the manual. It’s labeled as the Explorer Plus. I don’t know why.
Patented Swivel Cable Technology
Once your robotic cleaner is working its way around the pool, the only time you want to touch it is when you’re ready to drag it out of the water. It means you don’t want it to get tangled up, because it defeats the purpose of having a robotic pool cleaner in the first place. Maytronics use a patented swivel cable technology to stop this from happening, so where other cleaners would get tangled up the Dolphin Oasis Z5 will be able to keep going until your swimming pool is completely clean.
It Covers All Areas Inside Your Pool
As long as you’re using the Dolphin Oasis Z5 on an in-ground pool around 50 feet in length, it will be able to take care of all the different areas for you. The floor, walls, and waterline will be completely taken care of. If your swimming pool has any small coves it will be able to deal with them too. The only exception to the rule is if your walls are sitting at a funny angle. I’m sure you can appreciate even the best robotic pool cleaner in the world has some limits.
Easy Access To The Filter Cartridge
First it’s probably a good idea to tell you the filter cartridge is a considerable size, and it will collect all your dirt, debris, and dust particles. As an added bonus, it will be sitting at the top of the Dolphin Oasis Z5, so it will be easy to access and you’ll be able to clean it out in seconds. It’s one of those little perks to help you save even more of your precious time when you decide to spend a little extra on a professional robotic pool cleaner.

Clean Your Swimming Pool Within Hours
Earlier in the article we said the Oasis Z5 would be able to clean your pool while you were inside eating lunch. That might only apply to those living in France because they have about 4 different courses to cook, but it will still be able to make its way around your pool within 2.5 hours. This is only a rough estimate and the exact time to make it spotless will take various things into account, but the ability to clean your pool in such a short amount of time is extremely impressive.
It Will Only Cost You A Few Cents
The price you pay for any pool cleaner is merely an illusion. You might think you’re getting a good deal if you pay less upfront, but once you realize the Dolphin Oasis Z5 will only cost 15 cents each time it cleans your pool it begins to look like a bit of a bargain. Remember the cleaner itself along with different parts of your swimming pool will also last longer, so if you’re prepared to spend more upfront you’ll save a ton in the long run.
CleverClean Scanning + A Remote Control Are Included
I know self-programmed robotic cleaners capable of scanning your pool and clearing up the debris on their own are a good thing, so don’t worry because your Dolphin Oasis Z5 is capable of doing exactly that. Still, it’s always nice to know you also have full control over your pool cleaner, which is why Maytronics have included a remote control allowing you to guide the cleaner to any area of the pool you want. It’s perfect for those infrequent times when you want a certain section of your pool to be a little cleaner.
It Uses Dual Motor Power
Most of the robotic pool cleaners will only have a single motor, which is usually more than enough. The Dolphin Oasis Z5 decided to double up on motors to help it work even more efficiently. One motor will be focused on the propulsion system, and the second one will concentrate on filtration to create a much stronger suction. The dual motor power built into the Oasis Z5 means it’s one of the most powerful pool cleaners on the market, and it can compete with other types of cleaners that use your pool filtration system.
Includes Caddy
The Maytronics Oasis Z5 includes a transport Caddy, which you’ll appreciate because it allows you to easily move the cleaner around your yard and also acts a organizer/storage unit for your Dolphin Oasis Z5. Imagine having to carry it around in your arms every time you need to move it. No, thanks. Either way, the caddy is included.

Drop It Into The Water And Watch It Go
This is the ultimate benefit of using a quality robotic pool cleaner. It doesn’t need to be connected to any part of your swimming pool, which saves on both time and money. The only difficult thing will be plugging the Dolphin Oasis Z5 into a plug socket near your pool, and once you’ve dropped it into the water it will be ready to go. Even the design of the pool cleaner means it will be easy to move around and handle, including when you’re pulling it out of the water.
Alternative Models You Can Buy
We said Maytronics are the premium brand when it comes to robotic pool cleaners, so they obviously have more than the Dolphin Oasis Z5 on offer. They have 3 different pool cleaners we’re going to look at today in case the Oasis Z5 isn’t right for you, but to be honest they’re all mostly the same. They are all so good there are only minor differences between the 3 other models we’re going to look at, so let’s just focus our attention on the major differences you’ll want to know about.
Different Classes of Dolphin Robot Pool Cleaners
- Top-of-the-line models: The robotic pool cleaners have the most advanced features and are the most powerful cleaners made by Maytronics. They are all remote control-operated, have multiple cleaning programs to choose from and are designed with two motors for more effective cleaning.
- Classic models: thoroughly clean the pool floor, walls and waterline, making them ideal for pool owners who want a hygienic pool but don’t need all the bells and whistles.
- Basic models: have been designed for people who have a limited budget but still yearn to own a robotic pool cleaner that will both reliable and effective.

Additional Dolphin robot pool cleaners worth considering.
Dolphin Nautilus — 99996323 | Robotic Pool Cleaner
- Scrubs, vacuums and filters all pool surfaces in just 3 hours.
- Easy-to-clean cartridge filter system with spring clean up filters included!
- Patented swivel cable helps prevent tangling.
- Efficient to operate at a cost of less than 15 cents to clean your pool.
- Easy to use, Plug-n-play!

Specs | Nautilus
- Cycle time: 3 hours
- Cable length: 60 ft.
- Filter: Fine porosity
- Suction rate: 4,233 gal (USA) per hour
- Unit weight: 18.75 lbs.
The first thing you’ll notice about the Nautilus compared to the Oasis Z5 is the lack of a caddy, which means you’ll have a harder time carrying it around with you when it’s time to use it. Another noticeable difference is the run-time, and you’ll need to leave the Nautilus in the water for 3 hours before you bring it out and empty the filter. The biggest disadvantage is the fact it won’t clean the waterline, although it will climb the walls and clean up to the waterline.
Dolphin Nautilus Plus — 99996403-PC | Robotic Pool Cleaner
Differences between the Nautilus and the Nautilus Plus:
- The Nautilus Plus has top loading filter access
- Shorter cycle time of 2.5 hours. Faster cleaning system.
- 2 year warranty.
Specs | Nautilus Plus
- Cycle time: 2.5 hours
- Cable length: 60 ft.
- Filter: Fine porosity
- Suction rate: 4,233 gal (USA) per hour
- Unit weight: 18.75 lbs.
As you have probably guessed by now, the Nautilus is almost the exact same as the Nautilus Plus minus a few key features. The run-time of the Nautilus Plus is 2.5 hours, so it has the ability to clean your pool as quickly as the Oasis Z5. It doesn’t come with the same remote, so you won’t be able to target any areas of the pool if the cleaner misses somewhere. It also has a large filter on the top capable of trapping various sizes of debris, whereas the filter on the Nautilus is on the bottom.
Read our Review of the Dolphin Nautilus and Nautilus Plus. Both are terrific robotic pool cleaners that have proven themselves to be very reliable. In fact, on Amazon the Dolphin Nautilus has consistently been a top seller.
Maytronics Dolphin Triton | 99996356 | Robotic Pool Cleaner
- Scrubs, vacuums and filters all pool surfaces in under 3 hours.
- Convenient cartridge filter system that’s easy to clean and includes a spring clean-up option!
- Patented swivel cable helps prevent tangling

Incredibly efficient – costs less than 15 cents to clean the pool. - Plug-n-play! Designed to be easy-to-use.
- Self-programmed for optimal pool scanning.
- 24 month warranty – spare parts and labor.
The Dolphin Triton is the best of our alternative models, but you’ll still need the Triton Plus if you want a pool cleaner that takes care of the waterline. At least the basic model comes with a remote to help you target areas the cleaner might have neglected to take care of properly. It also comes with a caddy good enough to rival the one for the Oasis Z5. One slight disadvantage is the run-time dropping to 3 hours like the basic Nautilus.

The Dolphin Oasis Z5 is the king at this moment in time, and you won’t regret buying it for a second.
